Dr. Ling Guan, Dr. Naimul Khan, and Dr. Karthi Umapathy have been awarded a $669,000 NSERC Alliance Grant in partnership with Dapasoft Inc.
The project will develop interpretable machine learning algorithms for computer-aided diagnosis of neonatal lung and heart diseases. Mount Sinai Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit — the largest NICU in Canada — relies on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as the primary imaging modality for cardiac and pulmonary disease diagnosis in neonates. Operating POCUS on neonates requires a highly specialized skillset, and the project will additionally develop AI-guided training tools to accelerate proficiency development for new ultrasound technologists.
