New Frontiers in Research Fund Award: De-escalation VR Training for Emergency Responders

Dr. Naimul Khan has been awarded a $250,000 New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Exploration Award to develop a virtual reality de-escalation training platform for Canada’s emergency responders.

In partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police, the project will create adaptive scenario-based VR training experiences using multimodal sensing to dynamically respond to trainee behaviour in real time. The interdisciplinary team includes:

  • Dr. Natalie Alvarez (School of Performing Arts) — narrative design and embodied learning
  • Dr. Jennifer Lavoie (Criminology, Wilfrid Laurier University) — crisis intervention expertise
