MASc student Yufei Ren and Dr. Naimul Khan won a Bronze Medal in the Kaggle BYU Locating Bacterial Flagellar Motors in 3D Tomograms competition, placing 64th out of 1,136 teams.

The task involved detecting bacterial flagellar motor locations in 3D cryo-electron tomograms — a challenging volumetric detection problem with significant implications for structural biology. Our approach was based on MHAF-YOLO, a multi-head attention feature fusion architecture adapted for 3D detection.

Congratulations Yufei!
